Aims and Learning Outcomes
This one day course aims to:
- develop participants' knowledge of the kind of barriers which a range of disabled people experience and share good practice in removing those barriers;
- explore a variety of approaches to understanding disability as an aid to working effectively within their organisation;
- provide a review of key aspects of the Disability Discrimination Act and explore how its provisions affect their organisation.
At the end of the one day workshop, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate their understanding of the different ways in which discrimination against disabled people can operate in society, and in particular in relation to getting access to services and employment;
- Identify key barriers within society, and within their organisation, that may prevent disabled people participating on an equal basis with non-disabled people;
- Describe some of the ways in which a range of barriers can be removed;
- Distinguish between different approaches to understanding disability and identify ways in which using particular approaches can be fairer and more effective;
- Outline key aspects of the Disability Discrimination Act and explain how the law impacts on their organisation;
- Review their own practices when meeting and working with disabled people, and identify particular issues for disabled people within their organisation;
- Produce individual and group action points to identify areas of possible improvement within their own area of the organisation.
Refreshments and lunch are included. Participants will receive a programme, supporting handouts and a certificate of attendance. The day runs from 9.15 a.m. (registration and refreshments) to 4.30 p.m.
Cost is £90 per delegate from the statutory sector and £60 per delegate from the voluntary sector. One bursary per course is available to a disabled delegate from a small voluntary organisation.
A deposit of 20% is required to secure your place. We take payment on an invoice basis and accept either BACS or cheque payments.
