HAILSHAM DISTRICT COMMITTEE

NEWSLETTER

FEBRUARY 2009

It is with sadness that I begin my first newsletter with the report of the loss of four of our members over the last year.  We extend our sympathies to the families of Ron Lawrence, Gilbert Calway, Rose Griffiths and Beryl Higson.

I would also like to send our best wishes those members who are not so well at the moment, namely Edna Curd, Bridget Moran, Betty Mepham, Doris Brighton and John Bullied.  Our thoughts are with you. Get well soon.

We have had a busy year fundraising bringing in a total of £1716.93 to boost our funds from four main activities.  The Open Garden at Hailsham Grange raised £566.97, the tombola and sale in the Quintins Centre raised £211.96, and we were fortunate to be successful in our application to Barclays Community Awards, receiving a cheque for £500 and also successfully applied to take part in the ‘Win a Car' raffle in the Arndale Centre from which we received £438.00.

We will need to work even harder this coming year with the drop in our investment and less sources of funding being available.  We are always looking for new, interesting and fun ways to raise much needed funds so if you have any ideas please be sure to mention them to your Committee Members.

Donations received during the year:-

£240.00 from our members in Rushlake Green.

£390.00 donated by friends and family in memory of the late Gilbert Calway.

£250 from Peggy, Jean and Linda.

We also received several smaller donations which are equally gratefully received.

It was reported at the AGM on 11th February, that attendance on outings is decreasing and that new members were being sought.  If you have a friend or relative who is disabled and needs a little company, please let us know.  Unfortunately we cannot accept anyone needing a lot of care unless they can bring their own carer.

The feedback we get from outings is that most are enjoyed but the outings to places where you can sit down and have a chat with friends over a cuppa and maybe a bite to eat are most favoured.  We are always looking for new, accessible venues so if you know of anywhere please let us know.  We are also pleased to hear of places you especially enjoyed and would like to visit again.

We heard mentioned that some members would be interested in visiting the Imperial War Museum in London and it was this that was used as the basis for our application to Barclays Community Awards.  The trip will be in March (Vin will be sending out details shortly) and will be paid for from the award.  I for one am looking forward to it despite having to be dosed up on travel sickness pills to get through the coach journey (no disrespect to our wonderful drivers!  Just that I don't travel well unless I am in the driving seat!)

Take care and see you all soon

Sharon Pummell
